6 small things to do each day to avoid coronavirus

Touching your face spreads coronavirus

6. Don’t touch your face

If you’re fingers have been contaminated with coronavirus, touching your eyes, mouth, or nose gives the virus a direct path into your body.

And, while it may sound simple when experts say stop touching your face, the reality is in fact, more challenging.

In fact, studies have found that people touch their face up to 23 times per hour and that even medical professionals (who know better) do so up to 19 times every two hours.

A few tricks the experts recommend to stop the face touching include:

  • Keeping a box of tissues on hand – This is so that when you feel the urge to reach up to scratch your nose, you can do it with a tissue instead of your bare finger.
  • Being aware of triggers – If you mainly reach up to sweep your hair away from your eyes, try wearing it pulled back. Or, if your contacts bug you, try temporarily switching to glasses.
  • Keeping your hands busy – You might try using a stress ball to occupy your hands and keep them away from your face. Of course, you’ll want to add it to your daily list of objects to disinfect.

The good news is that as The New York Times points out, “As long as your hands are clean, touching your face isn’t catastrophic.”
