Strawberries soothe dangerous inflammation

A serving of strawberries per day could be the key to a healthy, uninflamed colon.

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that strawberries reduced colon inflammation in mice with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

In case you don’t know, inflammatory bowel diseases are conditions like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s where your gastrointestinal tract becomes inflamed and causes uncomfortable symptoms like stomach pain, weight loss, diarrhea and fatigue. Ulcerative colitis is specifically tied to inflammation in the colon and rectum, whereas Crohn’s can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract.

Inflammatory bowel diseases are becoming all too common. Three million people in the U.S. reported having an IBD in 2015. And a lot of that has to do with diet. The typical Western diet contains a lot of sugar, a lot of animal fat and not enough fiber, and all these factors cause colon inflammation.

But studies show eating fresh fruits and vegetables can curb colon inflammation and even reverse some IBD symptoms. And that’s where strawberries come in…

In this latest study, eating strawberries daily helped mice with IBD get rid of some of that nasty colon inflammation. It also reduced IBD symptoms like weight loss and bloody diarrhea. Plus, it lowered the number of bad bacteria in their gut.

Exactly how much strawberry goodness do you need to eat to keep your colon healthy and uninflamed?

In the study, researchers gave mice the equivalent of three-quarters of a cup of strawberries per day. So, that’s how much you should shoot for.

Now, I personally could snack on plain strawberries day and night and never get sick of them. But if you’re looking for more creative ways to incorporate them into your diet try:
