Are you taking one of these deadly stomach pain medicines?

Heartburn, reflux, ulcers and indigestion…

If you’re taking prescription or over-the-counter medication to treat any of these common health complaints, you could be taking a chance with your life.

New research has found that those medications your doctor gives you to reduce stomach acid could increase your risk of death by as much as 50 percent, depending on how long you take them.

And, the ones you can pick up without a prescription could be just as dangerous.

The drugs are known as proton pump inhibitors or PPIs and they are widely prescribed to treat gastrointestinal complaints. They’re even available over-the-counter under brand names that include Prevacid, Prilosec and Nexium.

Yet, a recent study is calling the safety of these medications into question.

Gas, stomach upset, loose bowels, stomach cramps, headache and fatigue. These are all symptoms of a problem more common than you may think: Gluten intolerance. It’s often linked to autoimmune issues. Instead of the body digesting the protein, it treats gluten as an… MORE⟩⟩

Trading temporary relief for your life

The study looked at the medical records of veterans taking these drugs and compared them to patients who were given medications called H2 blockers, like Zantac and Pepcid, to decrease stomach acid.

And, the results were frightening.

Patients taking PPIs had a 25 percent increased risk of death compared to the ones who were prescribed H2 blockers within the first 30 days.

For those taking the drugs for a longer time frame of one to two years, the difference was even more dramatic with patients on PPIs experience a 50 percent higher risk of death than the H2 blocker group.

These figures are especially startling when you consider that PPIs are one of the most widely prescribed classes of drugs in the U.S., with over 15 million prescriptions per month for Nexium alone in 2015.

And, that number doesn’t take into account the people who buy the drugs without a prescription.

Yet, PPIs have already been linked to kidney disease, infections that cause chronic diarrhea and pneumonia, low magnesium levels that can cause muscle spasms, heart palpitations and convulsions and fractures of the hip, wrist or spine.

So, what can you do if you suffer from the pain caused by heartburn, reflux or indigestion but don’t want to risk your life by taking these deadly drugs?

Here are the four steps to getting rid of your stomach pain the natural way:

  • Eat Smaller Meals – The first step to overcoming your stomach troubles is to eat smaller meals, spaced throughout the day. This helps because when you eat a large meal, the pressure can cause a backup of stomach acid into your esophagus and leave you hurting.
  • Eliminate Trigger Foods – Some foods will cause your heartburn and indigestion to worsen so it’s vital to eliminate them from your diet. Common trigger foods include fried or processed foods, coffee, alcohol, garlic, onions, tomatoes, chocolate and citrus fruits.
  • Control Your Stress – If you’ve suffered from heartburn for very long, you’ve probably already realized that it gets worse when you’re under stress. Work to control your stress through exercise, meditation and other relaxation techniques and your heartburn will improve along with your stress levels.
  • Choose the Right Supplements – Certain supplements can help provide natural relief for your heartburn and reflux symptoms. These include probiotics (25 – 50 billion units per day) to repopulate your gut with good bacteria, digestive enzymes (1 -2 capsules prior to each meal) to help you fully digest your food, HCL with pepsin (650 mg before each meal) to keep you out of pain and magnesium (400 – 800 mg per day) to help relieve your stress and improve digestion.

If you’re currently taking a PPI, either by prescription or over-the-counter, it’s important to recognize the risk you’re taking. Use the four steps above to overcome your reflux, heartburn and indigestion without medications and live a longer, healthier life.
