One more way to ward off one of the deadliest cancers in the U.S.

When we talk about death from cancers, there’s probably one big one that comes to mind — lung cancer.

That’s not surprising since it kills more people than any other form of cancer.

But, there’s one that runs a close second that many of us try to ignore, and that’s colon cancer.

In fact, if it’s found early, colon cancer is actually one of the most curable cancers, but the later it’s found the deadlier it gets.

The good news is that lately, scientists have been on a roll when it comes to this horrifying form of cancer, finding more and more ways you can prevent the abnormal cells from even dividing in your body in the first place.

Here’s the latest…

Bad breath is a small price to pay

Researchers recently found that eating allium vegetables — which include garlic, leeks, and onions — was linked with a significantly reduced risk of in colorectal cancer in a study of men and women in China.

The study, reported in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology, matched 833 colorectal cancer patients with another 833 healthy controls by age, sex, and area they lived. The scientists collected demographic and dietary information and found that the odds of having colorectal cancer was 79 percent lower in adults who consumed high amounts of allium vegetables compared with those who consumed low amounts.

That’s such an important number we need to say it one more time…

If you eat more allium vegetables, you could lower your chance of developing colorectal cancer by 79 percent!

As senior author Dr. Zhi Li, of the First Hospital of China Medical University, put it, “It is worth noting that in our research, there seems to be a trend: the greater the amount of allium vegetables, the better the protection.”

I’ve never heard of a better reason to put up with bad breath and eat more garlic and onions!

More colorectal protection

And, as we said earlier, this isn’t the only recent discovery that can help you protect yourself from colon cancer.

Not long ago, a review of 17 separate scientific studies reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI) found that higher blood levels of the sunshine vitamin (Vitamin D) can also reduce your chances of developing the deadly cancer.

Here are the study’s recommendations and how you can boost your own D levels.

And, if you’ve been tempted to blow off your doctor’s recommendation to get a colonoscopy, think again…

Another recent study that followed one and a quarter million people found that screening comes with big benefits.

Science now has answers to how you can avoid one of the deadliest cancers in the US: To colon cancer-proof your body, eat plenty of allium vegetables, like onions and garlic, up your vitamin D levels and don’t forget to follow the colonoscopy guidelines. Every precaution you take could help you live a longer, better life.
