7. Does stress affect your poop?

It certainly seems too. Stress-induced diarrhea is a scientifically proven phenomenon. You can even gauge stress levels by the number of metabolites in poop created by the stress hormone cortisol.

In a 2001 study, for example, researchers used stress metabolites in poop to gauge stress levels in a group of right whales in Canada’s Bay of Fundy. They found that, as ship noise decreased, so did the number of stress-related metabolites in whale poo. Apparently, ship sounds are the whale equivalent of IRS tax audits.
