Cellular alterations prove plastic in the kitchen is just not safe
Okay, I’ll be honest…
I’ve never been the fancy dinnerware type and my kitchen cabinets used to sport an array of plasticware, from salad bowls and plates to cups and even large mixing bowls.
To me, plastic was simply easier. I could pop it in the dishwasher with no worries and if one of the kids dropped any of it, it was no big deal.
Unfortunately, a few years ago I learned that all that plastic that I saw as a convenience was really a gigantic health hazard that had been hiding in my family’s kitchen…
You may already be able to guess the reason why — a common chemical known as bisphenol A or BPA.
It’s been used to make plastics for years, but research was rapidly proving that it was not only an endocrine disruptor — meaning that it messes with your hormones — but also could make healthy people pack on unwanted weight.
So, not wanting to expose my family to those dangers (but still enjoy the ease of using plastic) I tossed out all the old and bought brand-new plastic ware with that BPA-free label we’ve probably all become familiar with by now… Sure that I was taking steps to keep my family healthy.
Boy, was I wrong!
BPA replacements still doing deep damage
In fact, recent research out of Washington State University has proven that the compounds companies used to replace BPA in their products are just as bad as the original.
You see, the safety of BPA itself was originally called into question when scientists made the accidental discovery that BPA had leached out of plastic cages used to house female mice in the lab, causing an increase in chromosomally abnormal eggs.
In other words, they realized that BPA caused changes at the DNA level.
This led to the government setting a so-called “safe level” for BPA and to the replacement of the compound in plastic bottles, cups and other products… A label that’s recently been proven to be nothing more than a smoke-screen since those safe levels have produced insulin resistance and metabolic disease (think diabetes).
Now, the same team that made that original discovery has found that those BPA replacements result in the same chromosomal changes.
And, if the idea that the plasticware you use on a daily basis could actually be resulting in chromosomal alterations isn’t enough to scare you, the scientists discovered one more thing that might…
According to the researchers, those cellular alterations get passed down and remain in the DNA for a full three generations after all exposure to the chemicals is stopped.
Now, that’s a reason to ditch plastic for good!
Choosing safer alternatives
The best way to avoid exposure to these chemicals is to do what I’ve now done and throw out all of the plastic in your kitchen cupboards, even if it claims to be BPA-free and instead opt for dishes made from ceramic, glass or stainless steel.
You should also avoid canned foods whenever possible since the lining in the cans is made using BPA and its chemical alternatives. And, when you’re in line at the grocery store, skip your receipt and let the cashier put it straight into the trash since the paper used to make receipts is another hiding place for those dangerous compounds.
Don’t be fooled BPA and the chemical like it are a real and present danger to your health and that of generations to come. Use the tips above to protect yourself and your family and rid yourself of these toxic chemicals for good.
