The key to staying flexible, energetic and happy found in one fun activity

I don’t consider myself old but I’m not a spring chicken either. And with the passing years, I’ve noticed a few things…

My back has gotten stiffer, my shoulders have gotten rounder (sorry for the bad posture, Mom!) and my toes along with the floor seem further away than ever before.

But, are these things a normal part of aging that we just have to accept, or is there something we can do about them?

A study out of Australia has the answer…

Ballet, not just for kids anymore

You may fondly remember you’re time as a little ballerina… the pink toe shoes, sparkling tutu and pretty leotards. I know I do.

For most of us though, our days as ballet dancers ended many, many years ago.

But, maybe they shouldn’t have.

According to researchers at the Queensland University of Technology, participating in a dance program, like ballet as you age could hold the secret to anti-aging and even happiness.

The scientists enrolled seniors in classes at the Queensland Ballet for three months and followed their progress.

And, guess what…

Those senior ballet dancers saw some big benefits — benefits we all could use a little more of…

The dancers:

  • Improved their posture
  • Experienced greater flexibility
  • Gained energy
  • And, even felt happier and more engaged in life

And, don’t fool yourself…

This isn’t the only study showing how much dance can help your health.

One study found that the continual learning process that’s part and parcel of dancing improves brain health by boosting the volume of the brain areas involved in memory, planning and other vital functions.

Another study found that regular participation in dance improved seniors’ gait and balance and significantly reduced their risk of falling (and the serious injuries that can come with those falls).

And, in a third study, researchers discovered that dancing vastly reduced chronic hip and knee pain, improving mobility and quality of life.

Those are benefits I’ll sign up for any day of the week!

Just dance!

So, it’s time to get back to being a kid again and just dance.

Join a class at your local ballet studio or gym. You can even start with ballet workouts from home using YouTube or dance DVDs.

And, it doesn’t have to be ballet if that’s not your thing.

There are many types of dance programs available from fitness programs to beginner classes at your local college. You can try out salsa, tap, jazz or ballroom.

The point is to find one that you enjoy and that works for you and then to do it regularly so that you’ll grab the most benefits.

And, don’t be intimidated.

There’s no need to know how to dance before you start.

Half of the fun is in the learning process. Go with an open mind and a great attitude and you’re sure to enjoy yourself.

Dancing comes with some major health benefits — from improved posture and flexibility to decreased pain and higher levels of energy and a better mood. So, why not harness the power of dance to make your life better, starting today?

Editor’s note: Are you feeling unusually tired? You may think this is normal aging, but the problem could be your master hormone. When it’s not working, your risk of age-related diseases skyrockets.
