The missing micronutrient for balanced blood sugar
Diabetes is so prevalent, especially in the U.S., that some people hardly give it a second thought.
In fact, we’ve almost become immune to the sheer numbers of people affected: More than 29 million Americans have diabetes and another 86 million are pre-diabetic.
If you’re one of them, you know the damage diabetes reaps on your life. From the constant hunger and thirst to weight gain and extreme fatigue. Not to mention not being able to sleep through the night because you have to get up to “go.”
And, to add to your problems, guess what you get when you take those prescriptions that are supposed to help you feel better… kidney complications, upset stomach, dizziness, skin rash, itching, more fatigue, and even more weight gain. You might also add in blurry vision, dry mouth, or headaches that just won’t go away.
So what if you’re already doing everything right… like trying to control or avoid diabetes the natural way — through diet, exercise, and taking the right supplements that help your body control your blood sugar, keep it level, and get you back on track — but something’s just not clicking…
It could be you’re missing this…
Virtually unknown mineral improves insulin sensitivity
One nutrient that most people have never even heard of that should be included in your diabetes-fighting arsenal is vanadium.
This trace mineral helps your body metabolize carbohydrates. It also plays a role in transferring blood sugar to your muscles, so that it can be used for energy, which is the normal function of insulin. And, it improves your muscles’ insulin sensitivity.
So, if you have type 2 diabetes due to insulin resistance, vanadium could help you get control of your blood sugar problems.
It can even help balance the LDL cholesterol in people with type 2 diabetes. And by now you probably know if you can avoid statins — you should, even though doctors would have us taking them like vitamins. Statins can actually increase the chance of developing diabetes.
To supplement or not to supplement
So, with all these great benefits, should you run out to your health food store and grab that bottle of vanadium pills right away?
Actually, not so fast.
Testing hasn’t yet confirmed the safety of taking a vanadium supplement long-term versus getting it through dietary sources.
And, since vanadium is easily found in many foods it can be easily incorporated into your diet, just adding a little extra of these foods to your meals each day is the better answer.
This powerful little nutrient is found naturally in radishes, eggs, mushrooms, shellfish, black pepper, parsley, dairy and grain products. One of the richest sources of vanadium is dill seeds. You can also get vanadium from sunflower, corn, safflower and olive oils as well as parsley, green beans, carrots and cabbage.
The bottom line is that in the fight against diabetes, your body can use all the help it can get. Choose foods rich in vanadium to add to your daily diet to improve your blood sugar and insulin sensitivity and live a healthier life.
Editor’s note: Are you feeling unusually tired? You may think this is normal aging, but the problem could be your master hormone. When it’s not working, your risk of age-related diseases skyrockets.
