The nutty solution to save your thyroid
Are you completely and thoroughly exhausted?
Have you been feeling depressed or anxious and having joint pain, muscle aches, and headaches?
Maybe your skin feels dry or your hair just isn’t as shiny and thick as it used to be?
Guess what… Your thyroid could be to blame for all of it.
Even if you’ve talked to your doctor about your thyroid or had blood work that came back “normal,” your thyroid could still be the problem.
You see, most doctors don’t look at their patients as a whole person but instead just see lab values. So, these same doctors that run blood work for your thyroid will tell you everything’s fine as long as your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is within a set limit.
But, your TSH isn’t the whole picture. While your TSH could very well be normal, there are other thyroid hormones that could be out of whack, leaving you running on empty.
The good news is there is a simple nutrient that you can use every day to support your thyroid and it’s just a little bit nutty.
The deficiency that leads to thyroid damage
The nutrient that I’m talking about is selenium.
And, while most people are already familiar with the need for iodine for optimal thyroid functioning, selenium, which is also imperative for peak liver function, is too often ignored.
The reason that selenium is so important is that it works in your thyroid to help make an antioxidant called glutathione peroxidase that prevents free radicals and hormone-disrupting toxins from attacking your thyroid.
This means that if you are selenium-deficient, it can actually result in damage to your thyroid and ruin the way it functions, sending you on a downward spiral of hypothyroidism along with all of the symptoms that come with it.
Thyroid symptoms to watch out for
Considering that approximately 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease and that 60% of them don’t even know they have it, there’s a good chance that you could be suffering from thyroid problems.
Symptoms that could be caused by your thyroid include:
- Feeling tired or exhausted
- Muscle and joint pain
- Weight gain
- Dry or brittle skin and hair
- Constipation
- Hoarse voice
- Slow heart rate
- Brain fog
- Sensitivity to cold
- Elevated cholesterol
If you are having symptoms like these, it’s time to consider providing your thyroid with the support it needs, and feeding it selenium.
How to get your daily dose of selenium
The easiest way to boost your selenium intake is through food, especially Brazil nuts.
Most research shows that 200-300 mcg of selenium per day benefits thyroid function and overall health.
Since just one ounce of Brazil nuts, or 6-8 nuts, offers 544 mcg of selenium, you only need to eat 3-4 of these delicious treats each day to get all the selenium your body needs to help your thyroid function better.
For those of you out there that aren’t fans of Brazil nuts, you can also get selenium from eating tuna, halibut, sardines, beef liver, and even oatmeal although none of them packs the same selenium punch as a handful of Brazil nuts.
And, selenium supplements are also easy to find, if you would rather grab your daily requirement in pill-form.
Whichever you choose, the sooner you start taking care of your thyroid, the better your overall health will be and the sooner you can start feeling your best again.
