How to reduce hormonal dark spots on your skin
Have you tried everything to get rid of your melasma? That’s the term for those dark spots that show up as a result of changes in female hormones.
From microdermabrasion and peels to lasers, lotions, potions… and even prayer, women have searched for ways to lighten them.
Melasma, hyperpigmentation (increased melanin) of the skin, seems to be linked to hormonal changes, and often begins or worsens during pregnancy. For that reason, it’s often called the mask of pregnancy.
But even the normal hormone fluctuations many women experience throughout their lifetime, outside of pregnancy and when taking birth control pills, can be to blame for the brown or grayish-brown patches that can appear on your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, forehead, chin and even above your upper lip.
Sometimes melasma can also spread to your forearms and neck thanks to a little too much time in the sun…
But, according to a scientific study, there is a safe, natural way to reduce, perhaps even erase, those dark patches of skin — and it holds other health benefits that should excite you as well…
The secrets in the seeds
One of the most common treatments for melasma is sun protection. This means wearing sunscreen every day and reapplying the sunscreen every 2 hours. Dermatologists also recommend wearing a wide-brimmed hat when you are outside.
But, avoiding the sun may not be enough to keep the tell-tale signs of melasma from occurring or spreading.
So, a team of researchers in Japan set out to discover whether a powerful antioxidant was an effective treatment for melasma sufferers.
The scientists gave women who exhibited brown patches of melasma proanthocyanidin-rich grape seed extract (GSE) for a period of six months, followed by a one-month break.
They then gave the women an additional five months of grape seed extract treatment. The team measured the size and darkness of the women’s melasma patches before, during and after the study.
Here’s what they found…
Grape seed extract improved melasma symptoms’ appearance in 83 percent of the women taking the supplement. When have you ever seen a prescription that is that effective?
The following five months of treatment also further improved melasma symptoms by 54 percent.
This success led the scientists to conclude that grape seed extract is “Effective in reducing the hyperpigmentation of women with chloasma (melasma).”
According to the researchers, the beneficial effects of grape seed extract were maximally achieved after 6 months. But, taking the supplement for an additional 5 months may prevent melasma from becoming worse prior to the summer season.
Extra benefits of grape seed extract
Grape seed has really come to the natural health forefront. One reason is because of its influential role in promoting healthy arteries…
Grape seed extract helps activate nitric oxide in the lining of your blood vessels, which allows them to maintain pliability and flexibility to promote healthy blood flow and pressure.
But that’s not all. Grape seed extract…
- Can help fight aging and gum disease;
- Can combat damage done to kidneys from a diet high in harmful fats;
- May extend lifespan!
Women are far more likely than men to get melasma. But whether you suffer from melasma or not, or even if you are a man, the benefits of grape seed extract are just too good to pass up.
