The secret to better erectile function: Use it or lose it
One in ten men in the United States will suffer from erectile dysfunction at some point in his life — although some studies report that number could be higher than one in five.
It’s an issue that can be caused by big players like prescription drug issues and vascular disease. But it can also be a result of hidden issues that are often overlooked.
Sadly, as if the problems associated with erectile dysfunction or ED aren’t enough on their own, men who live with the condition also experience a significantly higher risk of early death.
This makes finding a way to maintain healthy erectile function vital in men’s health.
Luckily, scientists at the Karolinska Institutet and Uppsala University in Sweden may have discovered the secret to doing just that.
The cells that make an erection possible
The secret they found was in cells in the penis known as fibroblasts.
While fibroblasts are the most abundant type of cell in the penis, they’ve been almost completely ignored in ED research… and we’re learning just how big that oversight has been.
It turns out that fibroblasts play a very important role in regulating blood flow in the penis — an essential mechanism for making a penis erect.
Fibroblasts control the ability to achieve a strong erection by taking up the neurotransmitter noradrenaline — which leads to the widening of blood vessels in the penis.
But whether or not the process works depends on how many fibroblasts there are. And since that number decreases with age, it’s easy to see why levels of ED begin to skyrocket in men over 40.
But there’s good news…
The scientists also discovered a way to maintain a youthful number of fibroblasts in the penis — and therefore, youthful erections.
They found that the more frequently an erection is achieved, the more fibroblasts are maintained and vice versa.
“It’s not so strange really. If you exert yourself a lot, your body adapts. If you run regularly, it will eventually become easier to breathe while running,” says Christian Göritz, senior researcher for the study.
In other words, to keep erectile dysfunction at bay, the old “use it or lose it” saying really works.
Boosting erection ability
