By now, you know that the bacteria in your gut influence your health. But you may not know that they have a direct influence on your blood sugar. There are even certain foods you can use to tweak your gut bacteria to your blood sugar advantage — like mushrooms.

A 2018 study found that eating white button mushrooms increases the amount of Prevotella bacteria in your gut. These gut bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids (specifically propionate and succinate). And past research shows that succinate and propionate alter gene expression related to blood sugar management.

But white button mushrooms aren’t the only fungi with blood sugar benefits. A 2014 study found that portobella mushrooms can help your body process glucose more efficiently.
