Answers to your seven most pressing questions about poop

Questions about our poop

1. What the heck is poop?

That’s a question you probably don’t ask yourself often. Poop is such a natural part of our lives, we don’t stop to think about what we’re sending into the sewer system every time we hit the flush handle.

You may be surprised to learn that poop contains more water than anything else. It’s 75 percent water on average. It also contains carbohydrates, fiber, protein and fat from your food that didn’t get digested. Oh yeah, some dead cells from your gastrointestinal tract walls get carried along for the ride too.

There’s even a bit of metabolic waste in your poop. In fact, when your body breaks down red blood cells and bile, it creates something called stercobilin, which is the stuff that turns poop brown.
