Answers to your seven most pressing questions about poop

Foul odor

6. What’s with the smell?

Poop stinks. There’s no denying that. The reason partly goes back to the whole evolutionary thing I mentioned before. But it’s also related to certain chemicals in our food.

Chemicals called methyl sulfides from foods like cabbage make our poop particularly rank. So does hydrogen sulfide, a chemical best known for creating that rotten egg smell you catch wind of every time you pass a garbage dump. When your body breaks down tryptophan, it creates an especially stinky chemical called skatole (so keep a candle handy in your bathroom after Thanksgiving). The bacteria in your gut can make your poop stink more too. Some bacteria produce a compound called indole, which also gives coal tar its pleasant scent.
