Two common food additives that harden arteries

There are times when hard is good…

Homemade hard lemonade on a 75-degree day when you’re sitting on your patio with your best friend from high school? That can be good.

Hard shingles and boards on your roof… solid proof there’s no rot or leaks lurking around? Definitely good.

A hard mattress that’s super supportive when you have a bad back? Good through and through.

But when it comes to your arteries, hard is never good.

Unfortunately, hard arteries are the norm as you get older. As you age, your blood vessels (which include your arteries, capillaries, and veins) begin to stiffen. This prevents blood from traveling through your body as effectively, leads to high blood pressure and increases your risk for heart attack and stroke.

Luckily, how you live makes a big difference in the state of your arteries. And what you eat is a huge part of that. In fact, a new study shows that two common additives hidden in your food could be making your arteries a heck of a lot harder…

Chicken soup may be good for the soul, but additives make it hard on your arteries

Researchers from the University of Georgia just identified some of the leading lifestyle factors that harden arteries. They studied the metabolites of 1,200 people to figure out which ones are tied to hardening arteries.

In case you don’t know, metabolites are byproducts of your body’s metabolism. They’re produced every time your body transfers energy. The number of metabolites produced can show how your body responds to factors like smoking, diet or pollutants.

In their study, researchers identified 27 new metabolites linked to hardening arteries. But most of these metabolites had already been tied to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes, all of which increase your risk of stiff arteries by a lot. So, they weren’t all that surprising.

There were, however, a few surprises — like gamma-glutamylvaline and gamma-glutamylisoleucine — two food additives you might find in a can of chicken soup. These two food additives are often used to make chicken broth taste savorier, and they’re added to other processed foods too.

Unfortunately for those of us who enjoy a can of chicken soup from time to time, they could make your arteries harder. Other factors that harden arteries, according to this research, are:

  • Coffee
  • Alcohol
  • Southern foods
  • Vitamin E supplements
  • Pesticides

Tips to keep arteries from getting hard

So, if you want supple arteries, steer clear of processed foods, especially ones that contain gamma-glutamylvaline and gamma-glutamylisoleucine.

You’ll also want to cut back on alcohol (no hard lemonade for you, unfortunately) and coffee (even though many studies show it has health benefits). Eat organic to reduce your exposure to pesticides too.

And approach vitamin E supplements with caution. Some studies show that high levels of vitamin E have a pro-oxidant effect. That’s the opposite of an antioxidant effect, which means excess vitamin E increases the damage caused by free radicals rather than reducing it. That may be why vitamin E supplements contribute to hardening arteries.

All in all, just do your best to live a healthy lifestyle. You can start by following the simple 7:

  • Maintain normal blood pressure levels
  • Keep your cholesterol levels low
  • Keep your blood sugar down
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stay active
  • Eat healthily
  • Stop smoking

One study found that people who followed at least six out of seven of these habits were ten times more likely to have healthy blood vessels as they aged. So, make these simple changes now for the sake of supple arteries.

Editor’s note: Are you feeling unusually tired? You may think this is normal aging, but the problem could be your master hormone. When it’s not working, your risk of age-related diseases skyrockets.
