How to get the arteries of a 20-year-old

Did you know that it’s possible to have the young, supple blood vessels of a 20-year old when you’re 70 or even older? It’s rare, but completely achievable if you know what to do…

There are seven steps you need to follow, and I’ll tell you exactly what they are.

But first, let me explain why you want to keep your blood vessels young and supple in the first place…

As you age, your blood vessels (which include your arteries, capillaries and veins) begin to stiffen. This prevents blood from traveling through your body as effectively, leads to high blood pressure and increases your risk for heart attack and stroke.

In fact, your aging blood vessels combined with other risk factors for heart disease (like smoking, being overweight, etc.) lead to a few alarming statistics:

  • 40 percent of deaths among people 65+ are caused by heart problems.
  • Men 80 years or older are nine times more likely to die from heart failure than they were when they were 50.
  • Women 80 years or older are 11 times more likely to die from heart failure than they were when they were 50.

So, needless to say, slowing the aging of your blood vessels is something you should put some thought into sooner rather than later.

If you do, you may even be rewarded with the young, healthy blood vessels of a 20-year old and the vibrant health that comes from having an ample supply of oxygen-rich blood pumping toward your heart and other vital organs.

Stiff blood vessels lead to stroke and heart disease

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine recently confirmed that, although it’s hard to keep your blood vessels pumping like you’re under the legal drinking age, it is possible…

These researchers looked at the health records and lifestyle habits of 3,200 adults who were 50 or older and enrolled in the Framingham Heart Study. They found that about 18 percent of these people had healthy blood vessels.

However, among those who were over 70, only 1 percent had healthy blood vessels. These were the select few who were able to defy the conventions of normal blood vessel aging and maintain the blood vessels of someone half a century younger.

How did they do it?

Well, researchers found that people who had healthy blood vessels also had healthy lifestyles… surprise, surprise! More specifically, they consistently ate healthy diets, stayed very active and kept a close eye on their blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

“We didn’t find any magic bullet that kept people’s blood vessels young,” said Dr. Teemu Niiranen, a research fellow at Boston University School of Medicine. “It seems that these are people who just lead a very healthy lifestyle.”

As you know, sticking to a healthy lifestyle isn’t always easy. So, these people put in a lot of hard work to maintain healthy blood vessels. But it was well worth the effort because study participants who had healthy blood vessels were also 55 percent less likely to have a heart attack or stroke.

How to get healthy blood vessels

If you want to maintain healthy blood vessels as you age, researchers say you need to follow “Life’s Simple 7.” These are 7 lifestyle habits that the American Heart Association devised to keep your heart health (and blood vessel health) on track. All you need to do to is:

  • Maintain normal blood pressure levels
  • Keep your cholesterol levels low
  • Keep your blood sugar down
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stay active
  • Eat healthily
  • Stop smoking

According to researchers, people who followed at least six out of seven of these habits were 10 times more likely to have healthy blood vessels as they age. That means you get a mulligan if it’s too hard to follow all seven.

And the good news is, if you follow the last three habits on the list (exercising, eating healthy and not smoking), the other four should fall into place lickety-split.

Now, following these seven guidelines is a good starting point for healthy blood vessels, but you may also want to give your blood vessels a little extra boost by drinking beetroot juice or more green and black tea. All three have an amazing effect on your heart and blood vessels. Last but not least, you may want to try this triple vitamin cocktail that’s proven to prevent the stiffening or your arteries (the blood vessels that carry blood to your heart) too.
