Fruit juice that is brain juice

Inflammation in the body can be brain enemy No. 1 and lead to Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. But there’s a superfruit juice that can pull your brain cells out of the fire.

Research in England and Germany shows that the compound punicalagin, one of the natural chemicals called polyphenols contained in pomegranate juice, slows inflammation by the body’s immune system. When brain cells called microglia become inflamed, they can damage neurons, accelerate dementia and destroy the brain’s ability to store memories.

Around the world, more than 4 million people already suffer from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. In the future, as the world’s population ages, this number is expected to grow exponentially.

Protect your brain from Alzheimer’s

While there is presently no effective treatment for Alzheimer’s, the European researchers believe that the punicalagin in pomegranate juice could significantly cut the risk of developing the illness.

The scientists do not know yet how much punicalagin is necessary to be effective against Alzheimer’s and they plan further studies to investigate how it protects the brain.

“But we do know that regular intake and regular consumption of pomegranate has a lot of health benefits – including prevention of neuro-inflammation related to dementia,” says researcher Olumayokun Olajide.

For better health and less inflammation, Olajide recommends consuming drinks that are composed of 100 percent pomegranate. Pure pomegranate juice, he says, consists of 3.4 percent punicalagin.

Olajide points out that the majority of the beneficial antioxidant nutrients included in pomegranate reside in its outer skin, not in the fruit’s softer sections. And while he admits that the benefits of pomegranate have not been conclusively proven in a great many studies, he believes its juice will be shown to help fight inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
