Why ginkgo biloba may be the next big deal in diabetes treatment
Back in the 1980s and 90s, ginkgo biloba was a big deal. Research showed it could improve thinking and memory skills in people with dementia. So, it quickly became the brain-boosting supplement of choice for everyone, whether they had dementia or not.
More recently, we’ve learned that even though ginkgo biloba may help people with dementia, it probably doesn’t work for healthy people looking for a brain boost. But that doesn’t mean we should banish this Asian herb from our supplement shelves.
Even if ginkgo biloba doesn’t give you the brainpower of a 20-year-old, it could defend you against a serious and common disease — diabetes.
Ginkgo biloba fixes the insulin-making machine
Researchers from the University of Cincinnati just uncovered evidence that ginkgo biloba could help treat diabetes by making beta cells healthy again.
In case you don’t know, beta cells are the cells in your pancreas that produce insulin. Your body uses this insulin to manage blood sugar. People with type 2 diabetes have beta cells that don’t produce enough insulin. But based on this latest study, ginkgo biloba could fix that.
In the study, researchers gave rats with type 2 diabetes water infused with ginkgo biloba leaves for four weeks. This simple addition to their diet made a big difference in their beta cells…
In fact, it brought the amount of insulin these cells produced nearly back to normal levels. It also brought antioxidant levels up and oxidative stress down. Research shows oxidative stress could be a factor in type 2 diabetes too.
A supplement that gets diabetic beta cells to produce insulin normally again? That’s a big deal. But we need to see if it has the same effect on human beta cells before we get too excited.
Giving ginkgo a go
If you’re wondering whether you should try ginkgo biloba for diabetes, here’s what you need to know…
Although it’s far from a proven treatment for diabetes at this point, it’s a safe supplement at low doses. It can interact with some medications, though. So, check with your doctor before you start taking it if you’re on diabetes medication. You’ll also want to keep a close eye on your blood sugar levels while taking the herb, just in case.
