The best thing about having migraines is you won’t get this disease

There are a lot of downsides to having migraines…

They’re painful and nauseating. They prevent you from going to work and having fun with friends.

They increase your risk of stroke, heart attack, depression, and anxiety.

But what if I told you there’s at least one upside to these debilitating headaches?

I know what you’re thinking…

How could there possibly be anything good about dealing with god-awful headaches on a regular basis?

But a new study shows there’s a big bright side to being a migraine sufferer…

You’re less likely to develop diabetes.

Migraines drive your type 2 diabetes risk down

French and German researchers just uncovered an unusual but major benefit to having migraines…

They found that women who have migraines are 20 to 30 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Their study, which was published in the journal JAMA Neurology, tracked the health of 75,000 women for 10 years. And women with active migraines were more likely to dodge a diabetes diagnosis in those 10 years.

Even more interesting, women who successfully got rid of their migraines saw their diabetes risk increase. That means this is no coincidental connection. In fact, the link between migraines and diabetes has been observed before…

Headaches specialists have wondered for a long time why their patients develop diabetes less often than everybody else. We still don’t know the answer, but here are a few theories:

  • A headache may improve insulin and blood sugar function
  • Elevated blood sugar may protect against a headache
  • A protein molecule called CGRP that’s active in both conditions somehow connects the two

My favorite theory, however, is that headaches serve an evolutionary purpose of preventing you from ingesting toxins. People with migraines become a lot more conscious of what they put in their bodies and how they take care of themselves to avoid triggering more migraines. This behavior may accidentally make them healthier in general and less likely to develop chronic diseases like diabetes.

Why you should still work to get rid of your migraines

If you’re working to make your migraines a thing of the past, don’t let this study deter you. Sure, your diabetes risk might go up a bit again. But there are plenty of ways to lower your diabetes risk besides putting up with incapacitating headaches, like:

  • Getting enough vitamin D
  • Exercising daily
  • Quitting smoking
  • Eating a Mediterranean diet
  • Maintaining healthy cholesterol levels
  • Keeping your body weight healthy
  • Getting seven to eight hours of sleep per night

If you practice all (or most) of these habits, you’ll drive your diabetes risk down. And you know what else? You’ll probably improve your migraines too.
