Rosemary’s scar-free healing ‘TikTok trend’ verified

Ditch the silicone scar sheets and sticky scar gels because there’s a new kid in town when it comes to scarless healing…

Science has now confirmed the buzz around the latest TikTok sensation — using rosemary to reduce scarring and reveal beautifully smooth skin.

In fact, research shows that rosemary, used in traditional medicine for centuries, contains a natural compound that may help wounds heal more effectively and limit scar formation.

Here’s everything you need to know about the herb’s regenerative powers…

Peak Bladder Support

For women, age, childbirth, menopause and hormone fluctuations take a toll on healthy urinary function. For men, an aging body may result in the need for bladder support. Whatever the cause, occasional urinary urgency can… MORE⟩⟩

Not just skin deep

According to researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, the problems with scars go far deeper than the skin’s surface.

And as senior author Thomas Leung, MD, PhD, points out, “Many skin injuries end in scars, and in some people, it can lead to long-term cosmetic and even functional issues.”

These functional issues can include restricted movement, chronic pain and even changes in sensory perception.

Current treatments like silicone sheets don’t address these issues; instead, they only work on the surface.

But not rosemary…

In research using mice, scientists found that this herb could activate TRPA1, a skin nerve sensor previously linked to the body’s natural, scar-free healing abilities. This resulted not only in significant acceleration of wound closure, but also in improved wound healing at a deeper level, dramatically boosting the regeneration of other crucial skin structures, including oil glands, hair follicles and cartilage.

The acid that activates healing

So how does rosemary activate this vital skin nerve sensor that can heal multiple skin structures, smooth the skin, and eliminate scarring?

The herb’s superpower lies in a compound called carnosic acid, which activates this receptor, triggering healing and allowing the skin to regenerate optimally.

The researchers discovered that rosemary’s regenerative effects occur locally at the site of application of the carnosic acid cream.

Now, you may be wondering if other herbs work like rosemary, but the answer is no.

According to Rapp Reyes, co-lead author of the study, “We also identified other herbs, such as thyme and oregano, that may activate TRPA1. But rosemary stood out for its potency and safety.

“Other natural ingredients, such as mustard oil, or the topical medication imiquimod are known to also stimulate the TRPA1 receptor, but unlike rosemary, those can cause irritation and inflammation.”

How to use rosemary for your skin

So, is it time to make rosemary your go-to scar treatment?

The Penn team recommends speaking with your healthcare providers before adding rosemary products to your skincare routine or creating homemade mixtures.

However, they say that based on the results of their study, “If rosemary is part of your skincare regimen and you think it’s working, it likely is.”

If you do decide to put rosemary to work for smooth scarless skin, here are a few tips:

  • Do a patch test – Many types of topical essential oils and creams can irritate your skin, especially if you have eczema or skin sensitivities. That’s why it’s always a good idea to do a 48-hour patch test on a small area, other than your face, before using it on scars.
  • Topical use is a must – The scar-healing benefits reported in this study were based on topical use only and did not include taking any rosemary-containing supplement.
  • Carnosic acid is key – Because it is the active compound that triggers scar healing, when choosing a rosemary cream or botanical extract intended for topical use, look on the label for the percentage of carnosic acid in the product.
