Using magnets to relieve chronic pain

It’s estimated that nearly 50 million Americans live with chronic or severe pain they can’t relieve.

That’s the kind of persistent pain that can last weeks to years, and is considered to have no cure.

This type of pain is generally considered to be caused by dysfunctional or inflamed nerves.

And, if you’re one of those 50 million people, I’m sure you’d agree that living with that level of pain at all times, certainly creates dysfunction.

Like many with chronic pain, you’ve probably also tried numerous ways to find relief — from medications and massage to electrical stimulation and possibly even surgery — but you’re still stuck with achy, sharp, pins and needles sensations in your back, neck, muscles, bones and joints.

Do you just give up then? Are you doomed to live with the pain forever?

Luckily, a new study says no and gives hope for finding relief from your chronic pain from an unlikely source.

Stimulation changes ion flow

Have you ever seen those back massagers that have magnets in them or even the bracelets with magnets that are touted to help arthritis pain and wondered, “Do they really work or are they just a scam — another way to get my money that won’t deliver on its promises?”

Well, it turns out there’s real science behind them… At least behind the use of magnets when it comes to overcoming chronic pain.

In fact, new research by UCLA bioengineers has demonstrated exactly how magnets work in the battle against pain.

Here are the details…

The researchers created a gel-like material and packed it with tiny magnetic particles. Then they grew nerve cells in the gel to see how they react to magnetic forces.

What they found is that the mechanical stimulation provided by these magnetic forces actually creates a change in the way ions flow inside the nerves and from nerve to nerve when they pass along signals. The magnets also resulted in changes to the proteins on the cells membranes which play a role in the sensations of touch and pain.

By increasing the amount of magnetic force the nerves were exposed to steadily over time, the researchers found that the neurons adapted to the stimulation by reducing the signals for pain.

Yes, you read that right…

Just by exposing nerves to magnets, the researchers were able to decrease the amount of pain signals the nerves sent out.

The right magnetic therapy for your chronic pain

With this demonstration of the power of magnetics to effectively reduce pain, it could be a good choice for finding relief from your chronic pain.

And, when it comes to magnets, there are quite a few choices out there. Your choice should be as individual as your pain.

There are magnetic mattress pads that you can sleep on, wraps that you can use on your low back, knee or other joints, seat cushions and even magnetic insoles designed to be used inside your shoes.

But, there are some cautions you should be aware of…

Don’t use magnets if you have a pacemaker or metal implants that could respond to magnetic forces.

Also, you should avoid magnet use if you’re pregnant, taking blood-thinners or have a history of epilepsy. And, don’t use magnets over your heart, eyes or brain or on top of an open wound.

Your chronic pain may seem as if it will last a lifetime. But with magnetic therapy, you could kickstart changes in your cells and nerves that overcome your dysfunctional pain signals and finally find relief.
