How to accurately calculate your heart disease and diabetes risk

Are you concerned about your risk of developing heart disease and diabetes and the effect those diseases could have on your health and your life? I know I am…

Here’s the thing though…

Determining your risk level is tricky.

Family history can play a big role but can also mean nothing at all. Take my dad for instance…

He has heart disease which runs in his family. But, he also has diabetes even though no other relatives have the disease. Does that mean that I should worry about heart disease and diabetes? Or, is heart disease what I should be focused on?

Luckily, there’s a very simple way to accurately determine your risks for both of the diseases and it’s free.

It’s an metabolic online calculator that’s being called an “Internet Crystal Ball,” and it gives you a window into your health status so that you can make lifestyle changes to spare yourself from the suffering and expense that come with these avoidable illnesses.

More accurate than your doctor’s Predictions

If you were to see your doctor to weigh your risk levels for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, they would look at five factors:

  • Weight – because obesity increases your risk of both disease
  • Blood pressure – if you live with high blood pressure, it elevates your risk
  • Triglycerides – high fasting triglycerides are a problem
  • HDL (your good cholesterol) – if your HDL is low, you’re at higher risk
  • Blood sugar – high fasting blood sugar signals an increased risk level

If you have abnormalities in at least three of these five areas, your doctor will tell you that you’re at risk for metabolic syndrome which can lead to the diseases. However, these five factors alone don’t give you the whole picture…

That’s because it’s not simply a matter of “either you have it or you don’t.” The reality is that your risk level actually falls on a spectrum. You may have values that are right below the cutoff point in each of the factors that put you at higher risk, and those scores are ignored in the traditional measurements used by physicians.

To top it off, the traditional approach doesn’t take into account other variables like your race, ethnicity and gender. This is important because we know that, for example, African-American men are unlikely to be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome but still have a high risk for both heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

That’s where the online calculator comes in…

It was developed by a University of Virginia School of Medicine doctor and his research partner at the University of Florida and it weights all of the traditional risk factors and also takes into account race, gender and ethnicity to produce an easy-to-understand metabolic severity score.

In a study of more than 13,000 people, the online calculator was found to be a better risk predictor than the individual risk factors alone.

Simple to use online calculator

You can find the Metabolic Syndrome Severity Calculator here. And, it’s simple to use.

All you have to do is answer some basic questions although you will need a copy of your most recent lab results from your doctor’s office.

Here’s the questions you’ll answer:

  • Age
  • Waist circumference
  • Gender
  • Triglycerides level
  • HDL count
  • Race/Ethnicity
  • Systolic blood pressure (the first or top number in your blood pressure reading)
  • Fasting glucose

And, then you just hit “Calculate.”

It’s as easy as that to know exactly what your risk level is. The great thing about it as that once you know your metabolic syndrome risk, you can start taking preventative steps immediately to prevent the diseases, preserve your health and save yourself from needless suffering.

Editor’s note: Are you feeling unusually tired? You may think this is normal aging, but the problem could be your master hormone. When it’s not working, your risk of age-related diseases skyrockets.
