How to get coffee’s secret fat-burning compound
Coffee.
We love it so much that we we’ve made it a part of keeping our bodies healthy (thanks to research that says it can do things like help you avoid diabetes) and we’ve made if part of our weight loss programs (think bullet proof).
I’ve written posts in the past about how to add this and ditch that to your coffee to make it less calorie-ridden than your favorite coffee-shopped, whip cream-topped latte, and my colleagues have shared numerous posts on coffee’s biggest health perks.
But the really great thing about coffee is this…
The less we do to it, the more it gives up its gold. Here’s what I mean…
I set myself a goal to shed the extra 10 pounds that I’ve gained in the past year, and while doing some research I read about a supplement reported to accelerate weight loss… and guess what?
It’s a take on the morning cup of coffee which I won’t start the day without anyway, so, of course, I was ready to give it some attention, and share it with you.
Unroasted to preserve their fat-burning power
The name of the supplement is green coffee bean extract and yes, it’s exactly what you think it is — coffee beans that are still green.
You see, green coffee beans are actually the raw seeds of coffee fruit, (a source of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, with big brain benefits). The coffee beans we normally see only have that dark brown color because they’ve been roasted.
But, it turns out that not roasting them amps up their fat-burning power…
That’s because green coffee beans contain a compound called chlorogenic acid. It’s what’s believed to give them their fat-burning and weight loss power. And once a coffee bean is roasted, it’s gone for good.
Chlorogenic acid has even been studied where scientists discovered it can decrease how many carbohydrates you absorb from the food you eat, which can help reduce your blood sugar. And, they found it can help boost the function of your fat-burning protein hormone, known as adiponectin, to help reduce your body weight.
And, a Norwegian study that specifically examined the effects of green coffee bean extract found that when people drank instant coffee enriched with 200 mg of the extract, they lost an average of 11 pounds 14 ounces over a period of 12 weeks… A whopping eight pounds and two ounces more than coffee drinkers alone.
All with zero changes to their exercise and diet routines.
Those were some serious results!
And, weight loss isn’t the only benefit delivered by green coffee beans.
According to nutritionists, green coffee bean extract can also improve your energy levels and circulation as well as boost your immune system since they’re packed with antioxidants.
What you should know about green coffee bean extract
There are a few things you should know before trying the extract though…
Since it does contain caffeine, although usually less than regular coffee, it can raise your blood pressure and heart rate, cause stomach upset and headaches or even anxiety or make you jittery, especially if you’re sensitive to it.
You should definitely not take it along with another supplement that contains caffeine. And, if you’re on a prescription drug that interacts with caffeine, especially blood pressure and diabetes drugs, it’s not the best choice for you.
However, if you’re a regular coffee drinker, and caffeine is okay for you, adding green coffee bean extract in powder form to your morning coffee, or taking a green coffee bean supplement, could help you overcome your weight loss struggles. With all the benefits it delivers, is it any wonder it’s even offered at Starbucks?
