Essential oils really work with the help of a ‘brain vitamin’
Essential oils have long been used to help us feel better both physically and emotionally.
In fact, certain oils have been used to speed wound healing, while others have been found to help lower blood pressure.
Some essential oils have even demonstrated the ability to attack the bacteria that cause Lyme disease.
And of course, we probably all know someone who has used an essential oil, like lavender, to help de-stress, lift their mood, or improve their sleep.
But up to now, the subject of essential oils has been hotly debated, with many in the scientific community saying they produce nothing more than “the placebo effect.”
Well, that’s all over thanks to research from a team of scientists at Monash University who have uncovered exactly how essential oils operate to boost your health and your mood.
The vitamin in your brain
The findings, published in the journal Neurochemistry International, looked at how inhaling essential oils can support your overall health, but especially your brain.
That’s because not only did they find that essential oils are readily taken up by the brain, but they discovered that a certain vitamin that’s plentiful there gives them the power to do great good.
“Aromatherapy under particular conditions is reported to consistently enhance emotional health, including lowering anxiety and depression,” said Professor Louise Bennett, the study’s lead author from the Monash University School of Chemistry.
And according to the researchers, the secret to this success lies in the fact that your brain is naturally rich in ascorbate — good old vitamin C!
They say that when vitamin C combines with the essential oils you inhale, it gives them antioxidant powers that then benefit mood.
For example, when that lavender essential oil we talked about earlier is amped up by Vitamin C, it suddenly develops a strong antioxidant effect in your brain. And because of that, stress can go down and your mood can go up.
Because of this breakthrough, the researchers say they can move forward to optimize the therapeutic potential of essential oils by determining inhalable “doses” that could be used in treating everything from depression and anxiety to infections, inflammation and more.
Keep these oils on hand
Of course, most of us are already using essential oils. I am a fan of aromatherapy and mixing some essential oils with carrier oils to use topically.
If you’re experiencing problems with stress, lowered libido, or aches and pain, why not try ylang ylang essential oil, which has been shown to provide help for all of these conditions. You can find instructions on how to use the oil in this post.
Ylang ylang isn’t the only oil that can help banish the discomfort that keeps you up at night or stops you from doing the activities you love.
In fact, my colleague Joyce Hollman has compiled a list of six fragrant oils that act as potent pain relievers, as well as how to use them to grab the biggest benefits.
And if stress is your biggest issue, a study from George Washington University found an oil that can even work wonders in anxiety issues on the level of PTSD.
So, when it comes down to the question of whether or not essential oils can work for you, the answer is a resounding YES, thanks to the supercharging powers of the vitamin C in your brain!
